Site of the April 6, 1968 Shootout
When a late-night car caravan of Party members pulled
to a stop on Union Street to allow Cleaver to urinate
at the road side, a police car approached from
behind. Shining a searchlight on Cleaver and surprising
the Panthers, the police ordered Cleaver in the street.
Moments later, the officers fired on the caravan with
the Panthers returning fire in self-defense.
